In accordance with the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 1998, the Department of Justice (DOJ) may commission Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) to inspect and report on the efficiency and effectiveness of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The Policing Board closely monitors HMICFRS reports relating to the PSNI and follows up on PSNI’s response to them, including the ‘PEEL’ inspections which examine police efficiency effectiveness & legitimacy. This enables the Board to better carry out its scrutiny role and challenge PSNI performance in key areas of policing. PSNI is also inspected by the Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJINI). CJINI work closely with HMICFRS to agree inspections to be taken forward in relation to the PSNI, and both organisations have participated in joint inspections of the PSNI. Further information in relation to the work of HMICFRS is available through the HMICFRS website https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmicfrs/
