OPPORTUNITIES FOR OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALISTS
The Northern Ireland Policing Board is seeking to appoint Occupational Health Consultants to act as Selected Medical Practitioners (SMPs).
The role of the SMP is to conduct occupational health medical assessments in respect of serving and former police officers regarding application for both Ill Health Retirement (IHR) and Injury on Duty (IOD) Award applications in compliance with the IHR and IOD Regulations.
This position offers flexible working arrangements and training on the role will be provided.
Once the SMP is selected and approved, they will be included in a list of approved SMPs to be published on the Board’s website. From this list former and serving officers can select who they wish to undertake their assessment, provided that they have not been assessed and/or treated by that SMP within 2 years.

ROLE OF THE BOARD
The Board has a statutory responsibility for managing and administering the IHR and IOD schemes for all serving and retired officers in Northern Ireland. The SMPs make decisions regarding the police officers’ capacity to perform their duties under the IHR and IOD Regulations.
All assessment appointments will take place in the Board’s premises in James House, The Gasworks, Belfast.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for appointment as an SMP the following criteria is required:
Occupational Health Practitioner qualification for a minimum of 2 years (i.e. an Associate, Member or Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (AFOM, MFOM or FFOM or EEA equivalent);
Registered with the General Medical Council (GMC);
Hold appropriate medical indemnity and insurance cover;
Evidence/date of GMC revalidation;
The successful SMPs will be required to be security cleared to Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) level for the role and appointment will be conditional upon achieving this;

REMUNERATION
The Board will operate a set fee approach for each type of appointment which is non-negotiable.
Medical examination relating to all face-to-face appointments and completion of final typed report and/or certificate to required standard - £1000.
Paper based reconsideration and final typed report with certificate (if appropriate) - £500.
Please note that successful SMPs are required to independently make their own arrangements to the Board premises in order to fulfil their responsibilities of the role. When conducting a home visit as part of an assessment, SMPs are entitled to claim travel expenses, including the public transport rate of mileage which have been incurred in the course of official business to and from the Board.
