Having a rights based approach to policing is an important element of securing and building public confidence in the PSNI. It protects the rights of the public and police officers alike and provides a decision-making framework for officers to work within.
In order to monitor the compliance of the PSNI with the Human Rights Act 1998, the Board has an independent Human Rights Advisor to assist its work in assessing how the police are meeting their responsibilities.
John Wadham has been appointed to this role and will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to the Board along with progressing reports and recommendations to assess and improve human rights elements of policing.
The Human Rights Advisor appointment operates on a contract for services basis for a 3 year period with an option to extend for a further 2.
