Question

To ask the Chief Constable for an update on the unit based at Seapark that is responsible for the destruction of weapons, including any recent delays and/or difficulties, together with plans to address same.

Answer

The Weapons Control Unit in Seapark has responsibility for the destruction of weapons. In September 2022, capacity to destroy weapons was reduced due to staff absence. However, since then, steps are in progress to address this issue, including training of other staff within the Unit as well as drafting in additional staff from other areas. Weapons Control Unit will continue to work with Firearms Enquiry Officers to prioritise weapons for destruction.
