Answer
1. How many staff and officers have raised a workplace resolution request (WDR) / complained about an experience of bullying and harassment (B&H) as a result of their sexual orientation?
In the last three years, there have been four WDR/B&H complaints where the officer/staff member has cited sexual orientation as the basis for the complaint.
2. What training do PSNI staff and officers do around sexual orientation?
There is no specific training for officers and staff on sexual orientation. There is however a focus placed on personal attitudes and stereotyping. Throughout Foundational programmes, there is a focused awareness of individual needs and respect for all members of the community. The Probationary officer Development Programme has two members of the LGBTQ+ staff association talking about their lived experience in PSNI. The PSNI’s commitment to having an inclusive working environment is heavily reinforced though both the Code of Ethics and the Statement of Action on Conduct and Standards. The PSNI also have two online training packages focused solely on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, which is mandated for all officers and staff to complete.
3. What PSD outcomes are there focussed on homophobia/ transphobia? How many have come from within the PSNI? How many have come from a member of the public?
The current case management system does not specifically record this data. Sanctions in relation to misconduct are categorised by the relevant breaches of the Code of Ethics. Whilst no timescale has been specified in the request , a manual trawl of the data over the previous two years has been conducted and no misconduct sanctions have been identified that specifically relate to homophobic / transphobic conduct by an officer. The answer to the second part of the question is therefore none.
4. What is the current percentage of the workforce registered as coming from a LGBT background?
As at 01.11.2024 LGB & Other representation is as follows:
Police Officers – 3.42%
Police Staff – 2.15%
